HA!Man in Performance

HA!Man in Performance

Friday - 30 August - 20h00

Featuring the word art of Joke Debaere

Francois le Roux is a performing artist, and calls himself the "HA!Man". Most of his creativity springs from a flow of feeling, a breath (HA!) of skilful and three-dimensionally framed spontaneity - in a world still very much dominated by mental predetermination.

He has a formal classical background, and cello is his main instrument, followed by keyboard playing, voice, dance, writing and visual art forms.

Francois career started out in 1992, where he managed independently through networking, nurturing working relationships and audiences in his home country, South Africa, as well as Europe, North America and the Far East. Since 2010, formally trained actress and word artist Joke (pronounced yoo-kuh) Debaere from Belgium became his life and artistic partner who is adding with her own deep gifts as they reawaken the power of art to move the heart and mind in transformative ways.

Under Milk Wood by Dylan Thomas

Under Milk Wood by Dylan Thomas: A Play for Voices

THE DEFINITIVE EDITION

Friday- 06 September - 20h00

“To begin at the beginning:  It is Spring, moonless night in the small town, starless and bible-black…” Under Milk Wood, a play for voices was first staged in 1953 in New York with Dylan Thomas and five other actors at the 92Y Poetry Centre.  He told the nervous group before the reading … “just love the words, love the words!” and therein lies the magic of this piece. This language is rich, resonates with gentle humour and is beautifully lyrical.

Under Milk Wood is a delightful microscopic look into the simple lives of the inhabitants of a small Welsh seaside village.  Circle Productions presents this abridged version of the play reading, with David Muller as “First Voice” bringing the audience right into the thick of things. He is supported by a group of talented local community actors, all of whom are lovers of Dylan Thomas’ work. These eight seasoned performers play the more than 50 characters who live in Llareggub.

Be delighted and entertained by this group of quirky characters that includes Nogood Boyo, Polly Garter, Willy Nilly Postman and Captain Cat, “this one Spring day”.

This amateur production of “Under Milk Wood (The Definitive Edition)”,  is presented by special arrangement with SAMUEL FRENCH LTD a Concord Theatricals Company.

Chantal in Concert

Chantal in Concert

Friday- 28 June - 20h00

Chantal creates musical moments in which worlds unfold and characters evolve, telling stories about being human.  Chantal…a solo act, a woman, singer, writer and pianist, is walking her own path; and musically colouring outside the lines, crafting her own soundscape.  Chantal puts the piano to work in a different way for each song, with unique and compelling arrangements, daring manoeuvres and gentle pulses.  Chantal creates her own melodies and counter-melodies, blending piano, voice, and rhythm to create colourful imagery generating a sense of vulnerability with an edge.

Her powerful new album ‘Scars’ is available from over 600 quality digital music stores online worldwide – main links at www.chantalsmusic.com. Chantal will be performing live at the Casa Labia on Friday 28th June 2019 - a combination of songs from her first album, some new material and a few covers in between with comedy. The show is directed by Godfrey Johnson - one of South Africa’s leading performing artists, with a singular reputation as a Cabaret Artist, Composer, Writer and Director with multiple Fleur du Cap nominations and awards.  Musical director is Nicholas McDiarmid.

With spectacular piano artistry, an alluring voice and compelling lyrics, Chantal is a captivating performer and an evening spent with her is a memorable experience. Chantal’s most recent achievement was at the regional International Arts Talent Showcase auditions where she made it through to the National event where she will be performing later this year at Silver Star Casino in Johannesburg, and if successful will go on to the United States to perform in the final representing South Africa.

Leopold Mozart – Father of a Genius

Johann Georg Leopold Mozart (1719 – 1787) is best known as the father of the phenomenal child prodigy, Wolfgang Amadeus. But would we even have heard of him had he not produced this Wunderkind? Perhaps. He was a highly esteemed composer, teacher, and violinist in his own right, and enjoyed a reputation as a well-educated man of intellect and discernment during his lifetime. His violin Treatise won him considerable respect in teaching circles as a young adult and continues to serve as a scholarly source regarding 18th C performance practice today. But what about his own compositions?

In this lecture we find out more about this rather austere-looking figure, infamous for pushing his gifted children forward in the illustrious courts of Europe, using them as objects of display – and a source of income – often at the expense of their health – and certainly that of their childhood. We also know from copious surviving letters that he advised, cajoled and persevered endlessly to procure for his wayward son a good position in Europe, unfortunately to no avail. We explore his personality, his relationship with his children, and his remarkable career choices once he discovered their extraordinary talent.
