‘A Man & His Thoughts’ is an exhibition of prints from the Peter Clarke Archive & Collection.
At the beginning of 2015, the Clarke family entrusted all the artworks from Peter’s house in Ocean View to the Casa Labia Cultural Centre with the intention of recognizing and preserving his legacy as an extraordinary South Africa artist. Over the coming years Casa Labia will be mounting a series of exhibitions celebrating Peter’s life as an artist. Drawing on ‘Listening to Distant Thunder: The Art of Peter Clarke’ (Philippa Hobbs & Elizabeth Rankin, Random House), we will take a chronological journey from his formative years in Simonstown to his commentary on post-apartheid South Africa.
‘A Man & His Thoughts’, currently running alongside the SA Print Gallery, is the first of many exhibitions drawn from Peter’s private collection and particularly showcases the versatility of his printmaking and the important role it played in his early artistic development. With some previously un-exhibited works dating from 1959 to the 1990’s, the prints on show provide an insight into Peter’s thoughts and creativity.
