The Phax Trio Evening Concert

Evening concert arranged and presented by Shaun Acker & Andrea Fisher-Jeffes

A powerful wind triumvirate – Eu(PH)onium, S(AX)ophone and Tuba – formed by the alumni principal players of the South African National Youth Orchestra: Shaun Acker, Andrea Fisher-Jeffes and Zhaun Gorridon. The Phax trio has dedicated themselves to composing, and performing, their own high proficiency contemporary classical music on instruments that are often boxed in by musical stereotype. Both Acker and Fisher-Jeffes’ compositions have been premiered locally and internationally. The Phax Trio is innovative, eclectic and unique to South Africa. The combination of Alto Saxophone, Euphonium and Tuba blends itself to create a particular sound that is both interesting and mesmerizing.
Their classical programme for the concert at Casa Labia will include works by Rossini, Street, young SA composer Marincowitz, as well as new lyrical classical works by the Acker and Fisher-Jeffes and much more.

Elizabeth Handley - The life of Chopin

An engaging talk arranged and presented by Elizabeth Handley

The life of Chopin

In this presentation Elizabeth tells us about the music and short, turbulent life of one of the most popular composer-pianists in Western musical history. Fraught with illness, personal and political turmoil – and heart-breaking departure from his native Poland – this was the very wellspring of his inspiration.  Illustrated with some of the best-loved music by this quintessential Romantic,  we also learn about his subsequent success in Paris, and the impact of his mistress – writer-activist “George Sand”. Discover how Chopin revolutionised piano technique, his influence as a teacher on succeeding generations of pianists, and his contribution to the repertoire of the Queen of musical instruments.

Edward Saunders Talk

"The extraordinary life of Emma, Lady Hamilton"

The story of Emma Hamilton is one of rags to riches.  She was born into the humblest of circumstances in Cheshire in the middle of 18th. century but then rose progressively through society to become the wife of Sir William Hamilton, the British ambassador to the court of Naples.  Circumstances then conspired to drag her down again, and she died destitute and unacknowledged in France, but her triumph was to rise out of a world hopelessness to live a life that she could only have dreamed of as a child.  That in itself is no small achievement.
