Chantal - Singer, Pianist & Songwriter directed by Godfrey Johnson

Chantal creates musical moments in which worlds unfold and characters evolve, telling stories about being human.  Chantal…a solo act, a woman, singer, writer and pianist, is walking her own path; and musically colouring outside the lines, crafting her own soundscape.  Chantal puts the piano to work in a different way for each song, with unique and compelling arrangements, daring maneuvers and gentle pulses.  Chantal creates her own melodies and counter-melodies, blending piano, voice, and rhythm to create colourful imagery generating a sense of vulnerability with an edge.

Her powerful new album ‘Scars’ is available from over 600 quality digital music stores online worldwide – main links at www.chantalsmusic.com

Chantal will be performing live at the Casa Labia on 8th March 2019 - a combination of songs from her first album, some new material and a few covers in between with comedy. The show is directed by Godfrey Johnson - one of South Africa’s leading performing artists, with a singular reputation as a Cabaret Artist, Composer, Writer and Director with multiple Fleur du Cap nominations and awards.  Musical director and co-arranger on some songs is Nicholas McDiarmid.Directed by Godfrey Johnson

A talk by Elizabeth Handley

CLARA SCHUMANN – COMPOSER, PIANIST AND PIONEER – Celebrating 200 years – 1819-2019

This lecture celebrates the 200th anniversary of the birth of one of the most extraordinary women in the history of Western art music. We explore her life and work, and see how, against insuperable odds, she disregarded the conventions of the day, and pursued a rigorous and highly successful career as a concert pianist throughout Europe, and in Russia.

Not only did she provide steadfast and unfaltering support for her mentally fragile husband, Robert Schumann, and bear his eight children, but she also found time to create compositions of great beauty – works that went beyond the superficial ditties and keyboard pieces produced by women composers until this time.

In short, Clara proved that it was possible to manage a performing career beyond the borders of her native Germany, to initiate new practices in piano performance, and to compose more than just babies.

Adam Campbell - A Musical Journey

The ‘Musical voyage’ takes the audience to France for it’s first stop where the classical
saxophone started with a piece, Tableaux de Provence which is a collection of five
movements written by the French composer Paule Maurice, every movement bringing a
different aesthetic from the French traditional music. The next stop is in Australia with the
beautiful Melbourne Sonata showcasing the saxophonists ability to play for minutes on end without breathing! North America is the last stop before the interval with William Albright’s Sonate for saxophone and piano. This piece could be considered the most contemporary piece on the program but with all the American film influences Albright never strays very far from a beautiful melody, with the second movement often being cited as one of the most beautiful pieces of music written for the classical saxophone.

From North America the journey takes us down into South America and to non-other that
Astor Piazzolla and his Histoire du Tango originally written for flute and guitar but
transposed for soprano saxophone and piano. A prolific composer of the Argentinian Tango, Piazzolla has become a household name around the world and few of his pieces are more well- known than this suite of high-energy, contrasting tangos.

Across the ocean and the music takes us to Japan, a country with centuries of tradition
surrounding their music but with a 20th century fascination for western culture. The Fuzzy
Bird Sonate for alto saxophone and piano written by Takashi Yoshimatsu perfectly captures this genre of Japanese music with glimpses into the traditional music scene coupled with clear western influences. Should the audience wish to hear more music the musicians propose an encore, the beautiful and simple ‘Aria’ by Eugene Bozza creates a stunning contrast after the flamboyant concert!

Summer Sunday Jazz Concert Series

Moonshine

“In an age of digital synthesisers, sequencers and DJ's, Moonshine is a rarity - an exciting, polished band with an organic sound, led by saxophonist, Dan Shout, which features some of the hippest cats in the Cape Town music scene.

Moonshine is jazz with a kick! The journey starts in the Roaring 20's Prohibition Era and takes the listener through the Swinging' 30's and 40's, ending with the classic rock 'n' roll sounds of the 1950's. In other words, expect to hear music from Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, Nina Simone, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole and Dean Martin, right through to the rocking sounds of Chuck Berry, Big Joe Turner, Fats Domino, Elvis, Ray Charles and Marvin Gaye.

Featuring Ndumiso Manana and Amy Campbell on vocals
