James Grace Concert

Acclaimed guitarist and three-time SAMA nominee JAMES GRACE returns to Casa Labia for a solo performance featuring works from his forthcoming album 'Andaluza - Music of Spain III'.  Continuing his exploration of original and transcribed Spanish music for the guitar, James will perform Joaquin Turina's evocative Fandanguillo, one of the first works originally commissioned by and composed for Andres Segovia. Also included in the programme are a selection of works by Eduardo Sainz de la Maza, brother of Regino Sainz de la Maza, who was the dedicatee of Joaquin Rodrigo's Concerto de Aranjuez. Rodrigo also features in the programme, with the virtuosic and hauntingly beautiful Invocacion y Danza, a homage to Manuel de Falla.

For this concert and in the recording studio, James plays on a locally-built classical guitar by leading South African luthier Hans van den Berg.  He will also perform works from his previous two Spanish albums, 'Granada' and 'Sevilla - Music of Spain II', showcasing works by composers including Albeniz, Granados and Tarrega. among others.  A selection of James's solo albums will be on sale after the concert, including James's 2017 SAMA-nominated release; 'Chilled'

Summer Sunday Jazz Concert Series

Zingara is a singer/songwriter residing in Cape Town.  She strives for authenticity in the music she creates. Life experiences are interwoven in her work, and reflect the daring, explorative style she pursues.
Zingara’s contemporary blend of Future-Jazz, Neo-Soul and Instrumental complexity offers a deep and new sound. Whichever name you choose to pin on the simultaneously smooth, soulful, nostalgic and fresh sound, her emerging and progressive approach to music has captured the attention of the music scene. Francesca Biancoli (Zingara) was born in Bari, a multi-cultured seaside town famous for its Greek, Arabic, and Turkish influences. Growing up with access to such rich and varied diversity helped inform her spontaneous and non-conformist musical path.
Playing with Francesca (voice/guitar) is Nicholas Williams (piano/keyboard), Ryan McArthur (bass) and Kurt Diedericks (drums).

A Musical Journey

The ‘Musical voyage’ takes the audience to France for it’s first stop where the classical
saxophone started with a piece, Tableaux de Provence which is a collection of five
movements written by the French composer Paule Maurice, every movement bringing a
different aesthetic from the French traditional music. The next stop is in Australia with the
beautiful Melbourne Sonata showcasing the saxophonists ability to play for minutes on end without breathing! North America is the last stop before the interval with William Albright’s Sonate for saxophone and piano. This piece could be considered the most contemporary piece on the program but with all the American film influences Albright never strays very far from a beautiful melody, with the second movement often being cited as one of the most beautiful pieces of music written for the classical saxophone.

From North America the journey takes us down into South America and to non-other that
Astor Piazzolla and his Histoire du Tango originally written for flute and guitar but
transposed for soprano saxophone and piano. A prolific composer of the Argentinian Tango, Piazzolla has become a household name around the world and few of his pieces are more well- known than this suite of high-energy, contrasting tangos.

Across the ocean and the music takes us to Japan, a country with centuries of tradition
surrounding their music but with a 20th century fascination for western culture. The Fuzzy
Bird Sonate for alto saxophone and piano written by Takashi Yoshimatsu perfectly captures this genre of Japanese music with glimpses into the traditional music scene coupled with clear western influences. Should the audience wish to hear more music the musicians propose an encore, the beautiful and simple ‘Aria’ by Eugene Bozza creates a stunning contrast after the flamboyant concert!

Aim of the workshop: We start by working with, and applying different media and doing a series of mixed-media exercises; then we create a mixed-media artwork, combining all or some of the media. Elizabeth Handley - The life of Chopin

An engaging talk arranged and presented by Elizabeth Handley

The life of Chopin

In this presentation Elizabeth tells us about the music and short, turbulent life of one of the most popular composer-pianists in Western musical history. Fraught with illness, personal and political turmoil – and heart-breaking departure from his native Poland – this was the very wellspring of his inspiration.  Illustrated with some of the best-loved music by this quintessential Romantic,  we also learn about his subsequent success in Paris, and the impact of his mistress – writer-activist “George Sand”. Discover how Chopin revolutionised piano technique, his influence as a teacher on succeeding generations of pianists, and his contribution to the repertoire of the Queen of musical instruments.
